WHY DO WE NEED TO BE AWARE OF FORMALDEHYDE?
Formaldehyde is a toxic component with detrimental effects when exposed to, especially in the long term.
What are the risks associated with formaldehyde emission?
The most common risks are cancer, respiratory issues, asthma, allergies and headaches.
More serious cases are:
Formaldehyde poisoning -severe systemic toxicity, leading to metabolic acidosis, tissue and organ damage, and coma. There is no antidote for formaldehyde.
As Singapore's housing boom continues, awareness of these dangers is rising, everyone around you is renovating and these levels combined pose a serious health threat to your everyday life.
Formaldehyde is also a water soluble element, thus it affects pets and babies a lot more seriously!
What is Formaldehyde?
Formaldehyde is a colorless, strong-smelling gas commonly found in various building materials, household products, and furnishings, particularly in new homes. It is a type of volatile organic compound (VOC) that can off-gas from products like pressed wood, particleboard, plywood, synthetic fabrics, adhesives, and new carpentry. Because it is released slowly over time, formaldehyde can accumulate in indoor air, leading to prolonged exposure.

Can Formaldehyde Be
Completely Removed?
Formaldehyde cannot be fully removed immediately, it requires years to breakdown fully. Formaldehyde levels are also affected by external factors daily, such as receiving new parcels, buying new furniture, neighbours renovating etc.
While treatments and solutions can significantly reduce formaldehyde levels, they work by breaking down the compound over time and cannot be eliminated instantly.
After applying formaldehyde removal treatments, the chemical will continue to breakdown formaldehyde gradually, and formaldehyde levels in the air will constantly decrease over time.
However, it’s essential to maintain good ventilation and possibly repeated treatments to ensure that formaldehyde levels remain low and in the safe range.
Complete elimination of formaldehyde is unlikely in the short term, especially in homes with new materials - but with proper management, its impact can be minimized significantly.
